USAID LINC Contributes to Luhansk Investment Forum

October 5-6, 2011, Luhansk — USAID LINC participated in the Second Luhansk International Investment Forum, holding a round table and a trade fair.

The project also helped its partner economic regions – Central Luhansk and Northwest Luhansk – in showcasing their potential and investment opportunities at an exhibition, which started before the ceremonial opening of the forum and a plenary session à la Davos, and lasted through the end of the whole event.

Howard Ockman, USAID LINC Chief of Party: “In our discussions in the work we [USAID LINC] have done here we’ve discovered that one of the biggest problems and headaches for local producers is to develop new markets for their goods”

The round table moderated by USAID LINC Advisor Anatoliy Solovyov was dedicated to industrial parks, infrastructure, and logistics.

Tom Deeb, USAID LINC consultant: “Central Asia is going through dynamic growth. It is a region that’s ready to spend hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade. There is no other region in the world that will be spending as much in areas where Ukraine can participate”

The trade fair, called “Meet the Buyer,” was intended as a place for negotiation between suppliers of raw chemicals from the Luhansk Oblast and representatives from local and international chemical industry companies. After the fair, Dr. Tom Deeb, USAID LINC consultant, made a presentation on opportunities for Luhansk chemical and metallurgic companies to sell to the Central Asian markets, the capacity of which he estimated as $200 billion.

Since 2009, USAID LINC had assisted a number of municipalities, raions, and sub-regional territories in the Luhansk oblast to draft their economic development and competitiveness strategies. The project currently helps these communities implement the strategies.
